Indie Rock Band Based in Portland, OR

The Eldest Young has been a band since 2019, back when "rehearsal space" meant clearing out my living room and rearranging the furniture so we could all fit. I’d make homemade pizza for everyone and we’d spend the first 30 minutes catching up, and somewhere in there we figured out what we actually sounded like. That setup lasted until my girlfriend, now my wife, moved in and the living room had to go back to being a living room. These days we practice in an actual studio, which the neighbors appreciate.

Since then we've worked our way through most of the small and mid-sized venues in Portland, played 30+ shows to crowds of 100-plus, and recorded four full-length studio albums. There are still a few rooms left on the list to check off, and ideally a few more albums on the way.

The Eldest Young isn't a revenue-generating project for me. It's a way to stay creative, have fun, and give back to the community through the fundraisers we've built into our shows. It's also become a genuine creative engine: ideas and that started with the band have made their way into a lot of my professional work.

The Process

Strategy and Planning

Set the creative direction and release roadmap for the band: defining the sound, planning out albums, and mapping a show calendar. This also covered the operational backbone, scheduling practices, booking venues, lining up other bands to share bills, and coordinating with nonprofits to build fundraisers into our shows.

Brand and Foundation

Established a distinct identity for each record, treating every album as its own mini time capsule. Worked with designers, photographers, and other creatives across all four albums (All The Important Parts, Book of Spells, Content, and GREATEST HITS) to build cohesive visuals, from album art to show posters, that captured each era while staying recognizably us.

Ecosystem and Tooling

Built the production pipeline that takes a song from idea to finished record: an engineer tracks the initial drums and bass, then I bring those into my home studio and produce the rest using a mix of software and hardware before handing off for mixing and mastering. Also manage the band's website and the assets that keep everything connected.

Launch and Growth

Took the music to the stage and the community: 30+ shows across most of Portland's small and mid-sized venues, crowds of 100-plus, and fundraisers that gave back through our performances. Handle album promotion, photoshoots, and the ongoing booking and partnerships that keep the band growing, with a few more venues and albums still ahead.
